A brief overview of Zakat, Fitrana, Qurbani and Sadaqah – with links for further reading.

2.5% annually

Zakat

One of the five pillars of Islam: a mandatory annual contribution for eligible Muslims whose wealth exceeds the Nisab threshold.

Typically calculated as 2.5% of Zakat-eligible wealth.
Usually given once per lunar year – many choose to pay during Ramadan.
Recipients are clearly defined groups in the Quran, primarily people in need.

before the Eid prayer

Zakat al-Fitr

A small, mandatory contribution at the end of Ramadan – per person in the household, including children.

Should be paid before the Eid prayer.
Traditionally given as staple food or a monetary equivalent.
Current amounts are set annually by aid organisations.

Eid al-Adha

Qurbani

Sacrificial offering associated with Eid al-Adha and the Hajj season in the month of Dhul Hijjah.

The meat is traditionally divided into three portions – family, neighbours, and people in need.
Through aid organisations, Qurbani also reaches families in crisis regions.

Sadaqah

Voluntary charity, given at any time and in any amount – money, time, food or a helpful gesture.

Sadaqah is especially encouraged during Ramadan.
Even small, regular donations ('Sadaqah Jariyah') are considered highly valuable.

When should I give what?

During Ramadan

Annual Zakat & generous voluntary Sadaqah.

Before the Eid prayer

Zakat al-Fitr / Fitrana per person in the household.

Eid al-Adha

Qurbani / Udhiyah around the Hajj season.

Anytime

Sadaqah – every voluntary good deed counts.
